One of our favorite things about theater is that it is a collaborative art. Not only does theater rely on actors and writers, musicians and designers, directors and stage managers to create a play or performance, theater relies on YOU--the audience. A story is not complete until it is shared, preferably live. Theater practitioners rely on audience feedback in the creative process to make the performance what it is--multiple individuals coming TOGETHER with their communal responses to the performance space. But how do we do that when we can't in fact be TOGETHER? Theater takes COMMUNITY. As performers and practitioners, we don't feel alone because we all are in this TOGETHER. We are happy to do our part and keep our distance to keep our community healthy. But we still need to share stories with YOU our audience --so how?
We are excited by how other theater companies are responding and creating and making space in this time. We have a whole page dedicated to ways you can view new shows and archived favorites from other companies worldwide. The ingenuity is truly overwhelming, and the work that is in process, and starting to take shape is genuinely exciting. Some days we want to participate in that wonderful, creative messiness, and other days we question everything, becoming frozen with our own doubts. But everyday we miss our COMMUNITY. So we at Stone Soup have created Speak the Speech/Share the Story
Speak the Speech/Share the Story follows current artists sharing their interpretations of Shakespeare's words, as well as their own personal story. The responses have been wonderfully varied. Some of the work is from a familiar play (Romeo & Juliet), some more obscure (Timon of Athens). Some artists have given a faithful monologue, others have put their own spin on the words or written something new in reaction. But all the responses include the personal reasoning behind their choice. Their stories. And that too is wonderfully varied, like our COMMUNITY. You will see faces you know from past seasons and "backyards" we visit, as well as new faces we're eager for you to meet.
We have asked all of the artists that we have worked with over the past 10 years to contribute, and we are releasing offerings on an ongoing basis until we can all be physically TOGETHER to share stories once again.
We also want to open this up to YOU--our audience! YOU are what make us theater. YOU are what make us a COMMUNITY. YOU are what is missing in our art, in our stories.
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at a Shakespearean speech, or perhaps argue with one? Have Shakespeare's words have inspired you to dance or paint or bang a drum,? We invite you to share your talents with us as well as your reasons behind your choices--your stories--in this new space of community and storytelling, in our virtual "backyards."
