The Jewish holiday of Purim falls the first week of March. This holiday which commemorates the deliverance of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire is celebrated with, among other things, costume. In the spirit of celebration we are holding a costume contest amongst our audience members. If you forget your costume, don't worry, we will have masks for decorating as we combine the costumed revelry of Purim with the long tradition of the Venetian mask and the celebration of Carnival (which has just ended in Venice and which is taking place during Shakespeare's play).
No costume is too much or too little, so embrace the spirit of fun and put on your fancy dress for the night. A prize will go to the best costume! A note about the costume contest: |

Monday, Feb 23, 7:00 PM in partnership with SIUC Hillel 904 N Norwest LN, Carbondale Antonio is the Merchant of Venice. His friend Bassanio owes him money, but asks for more in order to impress and marry the beautiful (and wealthy) Portia. Antonio however has no additional money as his is all tied up in various trade vessels. He does agree though to ask for a loan from Shylock for the amount Bassanio requests.
Shylock is a usurer and is Jewish. Although Antonio, and others, make disparaging comments due to his religion, he agrees as business is business. His agreement to lend the money is that if Antonio does not repay him, Shylock will receive a pound of Antonio's flesh. On the night the agreement is made Bassanio has plans to throw a masquerade ball as part of the Carnevale de Venezia. Shylock is set to attend. Meanwhile his daughter Jessica has plans to run away with a Christian, Lorenzo. She flees, Bassanio assists Lorenzo and then cancels the party and travels to Belmont to woo Portia. Portia is greeting wooers that must undergo a challenge from her deceased father. The suitors must choose a casket based on looks alone that shows he is worthy of Portia's love. Many Prince's try, but Bassanio proves the first (and only) to succeed. Having won Portia all is set to end wonderfully, until news comes from Venice that Antonio is in trouble. Antonio's luck was not favorable and his ships have all been lost. He cannot repay Shylock and he is awaiting trial. Bassanio returns to help his friend promising Portia they will wed once Antonio has been saved. Fearing the outcome of her fate Portia dresses as a man and follows Bassanio to Venice and serves as Antonio's lawyer and take fate into her own hands. |
